Who Is Sumo? The Story in Key Dates

Sumo is a Luxembourg-based street artist and gallery owner. His real name is Christian. He is known for his character Crazy Baldhead. He has worked with Luxair, Porsche, and BIL.

1995. Sumo paints his first color mural in Luxembourg. He is 13. His spot is about 20 meters from his future gallery.

1999. He is studying graphic design in London. He creates Crazy Baldhead in a sketchbook during class. A potato-shaped head. Two eyes. A pointy nose. A big mouth. It happens by accident.

2002. He shows work for the first time. The venue is BC2 gallery in Bettembourg. He paints the canvases just for this show.

2007. He opens Extra Bold in Luxembourg City. It is a concept store. It has art books, a gallery space, and streetwear. All from brands not yet in Luxembourg.

2013. He stops all freelance work. He spends eight months preparing one show. The venue is BIL, the most beautiful exhibition space in Luxembourg, he says. It sells. It gets extended. Twice.

2018. He opens his own gallery in central Luxembourg.

2021. He discovers NFTs. He calls it the most exciting thing since graffiti in the 90s.

What Makes Sumo Different From Other Street Artists in Luxembourg?

Three things stand out.

He says no. He turned down a simple credit card design for BIL. He came back with a full exhibition proposal instead. He never lets brands use his art as pure decoration.

He goes all in. When Luxair asked him to paint a few spots on a plane, he sent back a full wrap concept, overnight. They said yes. It turned out to be the first plane ever wrapped in vinyl. Nobody knew it had been done before.

He stays consistent. He built one character over 25 years. He never chased trends. He let the work find its audience.
