Parquet, Sunlight, and Memories : Inside Aurélien's Family Home

Sometimes, the search for a home feels like the search for a soulmate. For Aurélien, 42, She Said Yes! founder and husband and father of three, that quest took almost 18 months. He and his wife were looking for something with soul — a place that carried the creaks of old parquet, the elegance of high ceilings, and the promise of light-filled days with their children.

When they stepped into this house, they knew instantly it was the one. Beyond the walls and the rooms, it offered a lifestyle: weekends in a garden of 300m2, cozy evenings in a snug ground-floor salon, and a luminous living-dining room designed for gatherings. Every floor told a story, from the parents’ suite to the children’s hideaways under the roof.

This is not just real estate. It is the architecture of family life, a home that carried laughter, memories, and quiet moments of togetherness. As Aurélien shares his story, he reminds us that finding a property is about more than bricks and mortar — it’s about discovering a place where life unfolds beautifully, day after day.

She Said Yes!

SSY              Aurélien, can you introduce yourself in a few words?

Aurélien    My name is Aurélien Dobbels, I’m 42, married, and the proud father of three. I work in real estate, but here I’m speaking as a homeowner. For me, a house is not just a roof over your head — it’s a partner in your daily life. This one has been with us for five years, shaping our routines and family memories.

SSY              How long did it take you to find this home?

Aurélien    About 18 months. We knew we weren’t looking for something brand new. What we wanted was charm — parquet that creaks, generous ceiling heights, and a home with character. When we found this one, even though everything needed to be redone, we immediately felt it was the right match.

SSY              What was the very first impression when you stepped inside?

Aurélien    It was the light. The living and dining room are completely bathed in sunshine, which gives the whole house a very warm atmosphere. We also loved how the space was organized — the children could have their own floor at the top, while we had our parental suite one level below. It felt like it was already designed for us.

SSY              How did you imagine the family living in these spaces?

Aurélien    We pictured the kids running upstairs, us enjoying quiet evenings downstairs, and everyone gathering in the garden on weekends. Having 300 square meters of outdoor space in the city is a real luxury. It meant barbecues, football games, and moments of freedom for the children — all without leaving home.

SSY              You mentioned a “small salon” on the ground floor. Tell us more.

Aurélien    Yes, it’s what we call our “petit salon.” It’s not very big, but it’s cozy and inviting. It’s the place where we sit with a coffee, read a book, or just relax. Every house needs a corner like this — not grand, not loud, just intimate and comfortable.

SSY              What was important for your parental suite?

Aurélien    Storage! We wanted a proper dressing room, connected to a functional bathroom. It makes everyday life so much easier. The bedroom itself is large and bright, and it flows naturally into our private space. Having that separation between us and the kids’ rooms really helps create balance.

SSY              And what about the children’s floors?

Aurélien    At the very top, our daughters share their space, with a central bathroom just for them and their brother. For our son, we wanted his room to feel more grown-up, so we integrated a small office area. That way, the house grows with them — each stage of childhood has its own corner.

SSY              The house is set back from the street. Was that a deciding factor?

Aurélien    Absolutely. It’s a three-sided house, so it’s detached enough to feel private. Being slightly recessed from the road makes it much quieter and safer. You arrive through a small parking area, and only then do you discover the house. It feels like a hidden retreat, even though we’re close to everything.

SSY              Looking back, what do you think this house gave you as a family?

Aurélien    It gave us rhythm and stability. The spaces helped us create rituals — dinners in the big room, playtime in the garden, Sunday mornings in the petit salon. It allowed each of us to have a place while still coming together. That balance is what made it so special.

SSY              If you had to say goodbye to this home, what would you tell it?

Aurélien    I’d say thank you. Thank you for five beautiful years, for sheltering our family, and for giving us the chance to grow together. I hope the next house will be just as generous, but this one will always hold a place in our hearts.

SSY              What advice would you give to someone searching for their “yes” in real estate?

Aurélien    Don’t look only at what’s there today. Look at the potential. A house can be transformed, but the feeling you get when you walk in — that can’t be created. Trust that instinct. If it feels like home from the first moment, it probably is.
