Meet Sumo

From Graffiti at 16 to a Luxair Plane: The Story of Sumo

It started with an illegal graffiti at 16.

No plan. No mentor. Just a wall and a need to create.

Today, Sumo paints in his own gallery near Luxembourg Gare. His character, the Crazy Baldhead, has even flown on a Luxair plane. What began in the street became a real universe. A studio. A brand. A living space filled with colour.

When you step into Gallery 1:1, it does not feel cold or distant. It feels warm. Like entering someone’s home. The space reflects his journey. Layers of paint. Strong lines. Bold words. Every canvas tells a part of his story.

At She Said Yes, we believe spaces shape emotions. A home. A studio. A gallery. They all carry energy. Sumo’s place is proof of that. It shows how passion can turn into lifestyle. And how creativity can grow from one small street into something much bigger.

She Said Yes!

SSY            Sumo, who are you?

Sumo         I’m Sumo. I was born in England. I grew up in Luxembourg.

I’ve been drawing since I could hold a pen. I never stopped. It’s how I think. It’s how I speak.

SSY            You started with graffiti at 16. Why?

Sumo         I needed freedom. Graffiti gave me that.

It was raw. Fast. Honest. I could paint and disappear. No rules. Just energy.

SSY            Did you always think you would live from art?

Sumo         No. School told me it would be hard. So I studied graphic design first.

It felt safer. But at night, I still painted. That was the real work.

SSY            When did things change?

Sumo         People started asking for canvases. Then for exhibitions.

One show became two. Then three. Slowly, it became my full-time life.

SSY            Tell us about the Crazy Baldhead.

Sumo         He appeared in 1999.

I drew him by accident. He looked strong and simple. I kept him and he became my alter ego.

SSY            What is the Sumoverse?

Sumo         It’s my world.

Every painting is a small part of a bigger image. I work with layers. Each layer is a moment in time.

SSY            Your colours are bold and joyful. Why?

Sumo         Colour changes mood. It can lift you in seconds.

I grew up with pop culture, music, cartoons. That energy stayed with me.

SSY            In 2018, you opened Gallery 1:1. Why create your own space?

Sumo         I wanted control. I wanted a place that felt like me.

It started as a studio. Now it’s also a showroom. And a meeting place.

SSY           Why “1:1”?

Sumo        Because it’s one to one.

I take time with people. We talk. I show the layers, the details, even the mistakes.

SSY           It doesn’t feel like a classic gallery.

Sumo        That’s the point.

It’s warm. It’s alive. I don’t want people to feel intimidated. Art is for everyone.

SSY           Your work flew with Luxair. How did that feel?

Sumo        Crazy. In a good way.

Seeing my art on a plane was surreal. It showed me how far a simple idea can go.

SSY           You also worked with Porsche.

Sumo        Yes. I painted a Taycan for five months.

The car was fully taken apart. I painted even the hidden parts. It was intense and exciting.

SSY           Today, what does your work focus on?

Sumo        Three things: creating in the studio, collaborating with brands, and exploring digital.

But the base is always here. In this space.

SSY           You never had a mentor. What did you learn alone?

Sumo        Test. Fail. Repeat.

If you wait for permission, nothing happens. You learn by doing.

SSY           If someone feels stuck in their life or career, what would you tell them?

Sumo        Start small.

Create something. Try something. One step leads to another.

SSY           Your message is “live like it’s the weekend.” Why?

Sumo        Because life should feel light sometimes.

If my art makes you smile or breathe deeper, even for a moment, I did my job.
